Congratulations to Hog Heaven of Durham for winning the WRAL poll for King of
the Cue Down East Barbecue. Hog Heaven edged Parker’s for the title. Chapel
Hill’s Barbecue Joint came in third in a robust round of balloting. The
official voting ended Friday. Thanks to all of you for participating and
expressing your passion for barbecue. Now it is time to turn our attention
to barbecue restaurants that add a touch of tomato to their sauces. It’s
called Lexington-style or Western Barbecue.
Who is the Best of the West?
Lexington is well represented in this poll and could very well produce the
winner. Please
vote for the Best of the
West BBQ. We will keep this survey going until Thursday at 9:00AM. I doubt we
will get the volume we received in the down east balloting but you never know!

Going To Carolina
by Robert J. Nebel
posted on
chattanoogan.com May 26, 2008
It was getting late on a Saturday night and we were getting hungry during our
recent visit to Durham, N.C. Since my wife was in search of authentic Tar Heel
barbeque, we asked some locals where we could find good “’cue.”
We were pointed
in the direction of Hog Heaven Bar-B-Q, a Durham culinary institution.
I went for their legendary Chicken and Dumplings. My wife had the Bar-B-Q plate
while my nine-year-old daughter, Caitlin, requested the usual: Macaroni and
Cheese with French Fries. Within minutes, our orders arrived and we were truly
in “Hog Heaven.” During dinner, I discovered that Tar Heel residents and
visitors alike have been enjoying this original hand-chopped fresh ’cue for
years. Hog Heaven was the start of our Eastern North Carolina adventure.

Eatery in Publicity Heaven
The not-so-new-anymore year is off to a good start for Hog Heaven Bar-B-Que,
2419 Guess Road, according to owner Mark Johnson.
"We were recently voted best caterer in the Triangle by Citysearch," he said,
"which is a great, great accomplishment."
Hog Heaven got a 9.4 mark on the Internet rating service's 9.9-point scale.
What's more, when the National Barbecue Association held its annual conference
last month in Raleigh, Hog Heaven was one of three Durham restaurants (plus
three more in Raleigh) chosen for the conferees' barbecue tour.
"They all said we had the best barbecue and chicken, but do they tell everybody
that?" Johnson said. "It is an honor just to have them by."
What's more, barbecue writer and television host Bob Garner stopped in twice.
Once was to try the chicken and dumplings. Garner, Johnson said, is going to
rate Hog Heaven in his top 3 establishments serving the down-home dish in an
article for Our State magazine.
"Usually a barbecue restaurant doesn't get recognized for anything but its
barbecue," Johnson said.
Later, Garner came back to film a story on the business.
"So we've had a lot of good things going on with the restaurant," Johnson said.
"We're definitely taking positive steps forward amid all the construction that's
been going on outside."

Celebrated Cuisine
Durham's most widely acclaimed chefs and eateries — Regionally or nationally reviewed, not part of a chain, and independently-owned. Noted for unique regional cuisine or a custom menu designed by a Durham chef.
According to Our State, Hog Heaven's chicken and
dumplings have "...the right texture on the tongue...." The magazine also noted
that the restaurant, while known for its eastern North Carolina-style,
hand-chopped barbecue, "...puts containers of its own Lexington-style sauce on
all the tables."
Health Inspection Rating: A (90-100+)
